Applications of Photography

Advertising 

The purpose of product Advertisement is to take a photo of a product or object, which represents their company in a positive and respectful way. Normal Advertisement photographs used such as for magazine advertising, corporate publications, brochures, restaurant menus, etc. Advertisement photography involves a client that wants to sell or promote something for which they need photographs taken.

This advertisement is a photograph that I found from the FedEx delivery service, The photograph show their FedEx vans and painted with their normal logo but on the back it has paint a picture of the competitions van.The photograph give the effect that the van is moving and driving faster then the other van. The impression that the photo gives is that someone has taken a snap shot from their phone, to give the impression its real and moving. This is trying to show that the FedEx van is always quicker and one step ahead of the competition. i think that this is a good advertisement because is catches the eye of people because its a simple idea that shows a lot of information. The photo is focused on the van and everything around the van is blur and stuck in motion, The camera has captured the motion blur on the photograph showing the van moving and going fast.

This advertisement is a different style of advertising compared to the other photograph. This photograph is very simple and focused just on the product. They keep the background white to give it a clean and bright look, it also make the colours pop out more because one of the things they are trying to show in this product is the new design and colour. i think this works well because the first thing you notice is the bright colours for this advert and straight away know what the product is and what company it is, they don't need to add too much detail to their advertisements because of the recognisable logos, phones, colours and texts. This type of advertising works because you know apple is a highly respected brand and makes you instantly want to go and have a look. I like this advertisement because it shows that the photo is very clear and simple and due to the colourful approach it makes it look cheaper then there other product and for a younger audience, which was the initial idea.

Documentary 

The purpose of Documentary photography is to capture important or significant historical events. This style of photography is usually used for journalism, it is mostly shown in newspapers to show current events happening around the world to get a better understanding of the event and include as much information in a photo, or even sometimes using the photo to add more emotion to the articles or about the events happening.

This photograph is from the current events happening in the Ukraine. 

The photograph shows a crowd of people in the street holding a big sign reading 'Democracy', this photograph says a lot and you can understand lots from this one picture. These people want democracy and the photograph shows how much they want it and how much it has disrupted the street and town, I think that this photograph is showing this because its crowded and shows clearly what they are protesting for. The photograph captures a lot of people protesting in the streets, at the center of this photograph there is the big sign, this is because its the subject of the photograph and the main story. This photograph was take from a high up angle, the reason was so that you get the better view and the photo captures a lot more information then it would have done it is was low.

This photograph show a group of soldiers lifting a flag, it shows them working as a team by all helping stand the flag back up showing victory over all the rubble and disruption. This photograph was published in the newspapers and taken on February 23, 1945, by Joe Rosenthal to represent the end of the WWII, the photo way an extremely popular and famous photograph and was reprinted in thousands of publications. The photograph came to win the P This photo was aimed at the American and British to show the ending of the WWII and how we had came together and reclaimed the countries from any invaders. This photo also give the viewers an effect of safety and feeling secure. The emotion displayed in this shows passion for their country and the power not to give up and become successful and victory is what you do. I can tell this because it look very empty and quiet but these people are still there stood higher than the rest. The subject of this photo are the five soldiers working together to fix the flag, shows them struggling and showing the start of a 'new life' for the citizens.

Fashion

The word Fashion photography refers to a type of photography devoted to displaying clothing and fashionable items. The main purpose of this photography is to advertise different or new type of clothing and has developed its own aesthetic by using exotic locations to enhance the appeal of a product.

This photograph shows Fashion Photography on a catwalk, This type of photograph is to model the clothing being worn by the model. This photograph is most likely taken to be published in a fashion magazine or an online fashion website, such as www.style.com. 

This is more of a formal and traditional way to show fashion photography, this image is shown as a portrait style photograph. The lighting and colour with this photo is very well lit and no darken areas so that you get and equal look and view on the subject/model.
This type of fashion photography is more of a fashion documentary photo recording events of a fashion show and more documenting the clothes worn by the models then actually trying to advertise something with the model and surrounds.

This photograph also shows Fashion Photography but in a different style. This photograph shows a model in a studio. The intention for this style of photograph is usually for a advertisement or online article. 

The intention isn't really as much to show off the clothes the model is where but a photograph to represent or advertise a brand or company, and to relate to what your company does and attract the targeted audience.

This photograph has a very moody and dark look whilst also looking colourful and fun, this has been given a simple and plain look to show off the advertisement. I think that this photo represents the product they are selling because it is trying to show that their product is simple and nice and targets people who are fashionable.

Landscape

The purpose of a landscape photograph is to capture a large area of land into a photograph and to capture as much as that land scape from wide areas to far in the distance. The purpose of landscape photograph is to capture the landscape and try and give a feeling behind it or a message within it.

This photograph shows the landscape of the sea, with a boat still in the water. This photograph give a very calm and relaxing feeling because of the still water and the colourful sky.

This photograph also shows a reflection, the water within this photograph reflects the sky and the boat which gives it an abstract style.
The subject of this photograph is the boat which is floating in the center of the image, its shown resting in calm water and not being disturbed by anything.

This photograph also shows Landscape Photograph, this photograph shows the mountains and  the valleys filled with fog and trees. 

The photograph was taken from a high angle allowing it to take in a lot more information and lets you see far more into the distance. The style of this photograph is more natural style and a wild style.


The focus on this photograph is the house over looking the valley, the atmosphere around it seems very calm with the soft clouds slowly covering the hills. The mountain in the background aren't in as much focus as the rest of the image but it still adds effect to the image showing the scale of the area.

Proposal & Rational

The theme I chosen  for my photography is Space theme, the reason i have chosen this theme is because i think its an interesting and creative theme to do.

The idea i have for this theme came about when i was walking down a street and saw the landscape of the city and saw how the building fill the space and every inch is used up, I got my main inspiration from a landscape photo i seen online, where it clearly shows the landscape of the building, but also shows a lot of the sky with the sunset in the background.

This aspect is important to the brief because doing this research and recording my idea down will help me complete other tasks that are on the brief and show how i got to where my idea is and the thought process i went through. The do's and don'ts of this task are too stick to your initial idea and what your research you have done, some of the don'ts for this task are don't take the same photos as somebody else and don't take only one photo.

The intended message in my photograph is to should 'Space' that has been filled up with buildings and roads basically showing the opposite of space by showing it being full. The other intended message within my photograph is to show the skylight above it, but with the sky i want it to represent Space and the unknown. This aspect will allow me to add more creativity to my photograph and develop my idea even further.

The objective for my idea is to try and portray all these initial ideas within the final photograph and make it clear to the viewer on what theme it is and what the reason was behind it. I hope my idea will create awareness about the amount and space has been taken up by building and cities, but also getting the awareness about space across to the audience.

The audience i intend to aim my photograph at is a mass audience because it doesn't really target a specific type of person.

THE YOUNG & RUBICAM CATEGORIES

 In terms of the 'Young and Rubicam' categories i think that my photograph will come under 'The Explorer' or 'The Mainstream'. I think this because 'The Explorer' shows the creative and imaginative side to the photograph, and the 'The Mainstream' category because it also shows the daily routine and life of the city. The benefit of knowing my target audience is it makes it easier for me to know what kind of things i should include in my photograph and how i should portray the theme and the idea behind it.

The deadline for this project is Thursday 3rd April 2014, the importance in working to a deadline is to ensure that you keep on track and to a schedule so you get all the work completed to the correct standard the brief requires. Some of the challenges i might face when taking my photograph could be the weather, i want the weather to be sunny. A way that i can over come this problem is too check the weather forecast in advance and choose a day where there is more chance of it being sunny and to standard, if there isn't any sunny day forecasted before the deadline i will have to change my vision slightly to make it suitable to the conditions. For this idea i don't need a budget because i want be travelling anywhere or need to buy any props or equipment for the shoot or production work.

Summary 

The Meaning Behind this photograph is to show two different type of "space", it shows the space taken up with the city landscape but then also shows the space up in the sky. This shows a contrast between the meaning  and i think it shows it well and clearly. I think this idea successfully achieves the brief because it clearly shows the theme and and will be printed and presented correctly.

Evaluation of Photography

Glass 

This photograph show the theme of glass. In this photo you can see a shop window with the glass reflecting me and the landscape surroundings in the glass.

The historical & cultural context with this photo social, this photograph shows a lot of colours within the photograph because it reflect the colours surrounding it.
It is more of an abstract photograph because it isn't taken in the traditional style,  the camera I used to take this photograph was a Cannon 600D with a 18-55mm lens, I had to ensure I had the correct settings in the camera to allow me to get the best photograph. 

This photograph was taken of the sky I had to the shutter speed up to1/400 because it didn't need to be too fast to capture anything special but fast enough to avoid motion blur. I set the ISO to 1600 and the F-stop to 13 which improves the lighting and affects the focus to make it more suitable for the photo and conditions.

 It was sunny outside and really bright, so I set the white balance to 'Daylight' setting so that the colours are correct and doesn't  look distorted. I think that this photo is very effective because it has a modern look but with a message, i am happy with the final result of my photograph and it was what i initially expected.

Strengths - I think the strengths of this photo is that i got a good lighting which allowed me to capture the items in the shop window but also capturing a lot of detail in depth in the reflection of the photograph.

Weaknesses- If i had to take this photo again i would probably try and frame my image a lot better and professionally because for this photo i didn't have a tripod and wasn't able to stable the image to how i would have initially liked too.


This photograph shows the theme of Glass. In this photograph you can see the sun shining through the glass giving the light the distorted look, due to the angle of the camera. I wanted to show the sun light reflecting and shining through a window or piece of glass to give the stretched/distorted look. 

This photo is more of a traditional style than an abstract style because for example the photo has lines in it which makes it more formal. 

For the photograph had to choose the setting carefully to ensure that it was over exposed, the Shutter Speed was set to 1/1600 and F-Stop to 16 and ISO on 3200 so that it lets in more light without it being distorted or pixelated. I used a 18-55mm lens for this photograph, zoomed into 24 mm, and  white balance set to daylight.

Strengths - The strengths to this image are that i was able to capture the sun shining through the glass windows at the right time, doing this allowed me to get the stretched look on the sun light.

Weaknesses - The weaknesses of taking this image is that i had to move my position because of obstructions or clouds, if i had to take this photo again i would choose a less cloudy day and have more time.

Heavy

This photograph shows the theme of heavy. The photo shows and a builders skip on the street, i thought that this photo shows the theme well because skips usually carry heavy items and look heavy due to the way it looks. 

To give the impression of the heavy theme i used a low camera angle to make the object seems bigger and stronger. 
The settings for this photograph were on; Shutter Speed 1/1600, F-stop 18, ISO 6400, and lens zoomed in at 18 mm.


The theme for this photograph was heavy. The aim was try and show this theme within this photo. 
I think that i showed this well because i used a low camera angle to make the building seem even taller and heavier. This photo has straight lines through it which gives it more of a formal traditional look. The settings for this photo are F-stop 22, ISO 6400, zoom at 18mm and shutter speed at 1/1600.

Strengths - The strengths to these photographs are that i was able to get the low angle affect making the buildings look larger and heavier. 





Space

The theme for this photograph is Space. This photograph shows this theme in more of a traditional style.

I wanted to show the space within the landscape showing how full the space is packed with buildings and bridges. The reason i chose this area for this photograph was because it has got lots of building in the distance and has lines running along the side of the photo leading you into the city landscape.

I needed to make sure i got the best quality for the depth of field i wanted, to get this i need the settings on correctly. The setting for this photograph where;  F-stop on 16, ISO 3200, zoom at 38 mm and shutter speed on 1/1600.


This photograph shows the theme of space. The style of the photograph is abstract, because it's a different way of showing the theme. 

The idea behind this photograph is to how 'Space' beyond the earth, it shows someone laying down outside look up into 'Space', looking into the unknown.

 I think this shows the theme in a much more creative way. The settings for this photograph where F-stop on 22, ISO 6400, lens zoom at 18 mm and the shutter speed  at 1/1600.

Time

This photograph shows the theme of Time. I think this shows time in a way abstract way because of the camera angle. 

The photograph shows a tree, the reason i chose this tree was because it is an old tree and is oddly shaped, it shows how the tree has grow and shaped like this over time. 

For this photo i chose the setting of; F-stop on 22, ISO 6400, camera lens at 20 mm and  shutter speed at 1/1600.




This photograph shows the theme of Time. This photo is more of a traditional photo because its in a portrait style which is more of an old fashioned and traditional technique. 

This photograph shows a tree, the reason i chose this tree was because it old, worn and can see that it has aged over the years. 

The settings i chose for this photograph where F-Stop 22, ISO 6400, zoom at 20 mm and shutter speed on 1/1600.
